So, if you’re ready to say goodbye to bulky binders and hello to streamlined organization, keep reading to learn all about discbound binding.

What is a three ring binder?

Most are familiar with the traditional three ring binder. The three ring binder has been around since the late 1800s. It was made by a German entrepreneur and inventor named Friedrich Soennecken. Some may say that the binder was created earlier in the 1800s by an American who filed the first patent for a binder; however, binders actually didn’t become available until Friedrich Soennecken made them. The binder was crafted with binder boards.

The technology has advanced since the 1800s and allowed us to change how we compose binders. Today, you can find binders of all different sizes, colors, and cover designs. They are mostly made of plastic which is probably not as good for the world as binder boards, but they are cheaper to be made and more visually appealing.

What is disc binding?

Discs binding is where specific discs that are created with a slightly larger rim are used so a paper with a “mushroom” hole punch hooks onto the disc. Discs are placed every few centimeters down the length of the paper to bind them together. The diameters of discs have been created with different sizes to allow space for a few pages or many pages. The larger the disc the more pages can be bound together.

Ensuring you choose the right size disc for what you are binding is important! If you do not choose a size that is sufficient for the project you may have troubles with the way your pages flip, pages not lying flat, or the feeling that your project is not sturdy.

Discs sizes;

  • ¼ inch discs holds 20 – 50 sheets of paper
  • ½ inch discs hold 50 – 70 sheets of paper
  • ¾ inch discs hold 90- 120 sheets of paper
  • 1 inch discs hold 110 – 150 sheets of paper
  • 1½ inch discs hold 140- 220 sheets of paper

The great thing about disc binding is you can easily change the discs! If you are just getting started I recommend starting with a smaller size then go to a larger size. You may decide instead of binding all pages together you may want to separate them. Let’s use a recipe book as an example. If you decide to bind our recipe pages together into a recipe book instead of having 150 recipes with a mix of breakfast, lunch, and dinner maybe you make 3 books; one breakfast, one lunch, and one dinner. This is the goal for my recipe books!

Don’t forget to use discbound you will need to have a the paper punch that is specific for discs. A three hole punch or single hole puncher will not work. The disc punch is in a mushrooms shape. You can purchase them in all different strengths so you can punch 1 page or a number of pages at a time.
